Salvazione Christian School is an independent school which is funded and supported by The Ridge, Auckland Park and St Katherine’s schools, plus other businesses and volunteers.
The school has been in existence since 1991 and was founded when a need arose to accommodate children from Slovo Park informal settlement and the surrounding areas. These children were unable to attend local schools due to dire financial or personal circumstances and a lack of available places at the surrounding schools.
Early lessons took place in a church hall until funds could be raised for a new building and today the school in Brixton is within walking distance for most of the children and its location, opposite a large municipal park, makes it ideal for the attending learners.
We read and do maths with Grade 2 and 3 classes once a week for 45 minute sessions. Each volunteer gives each child extra time and attention. The programme also receives huge support from all the teachers at this special school including the Principal.
