YEOVILLE

Yeoville Community School (YCS) was established in January 1993 and at the time was identified as a centre suitable for children of exiles returning to South Africa. At present the school caters for 932 learners most of whom come from extremely impoverished backgrounds and live in Yeoville, Hillbrow, Berea and Alexandra.
The Link has been operating at YCS since 2010 focusing on both literacy and numeracy among Grade 2 learners.  Currently the centre has 9 volunteers who see 40 pupils twice a week.
The school has been graded as a Quintile 4 school and is thus non fee-paying. It is housed in a former convent built in 1914, so maintenance is an ongoing problem, as is managing day-to-day needs and finding the funds to buy books. The Link has assisted the school by establishing a library at YCS, run by the volunteers.
From its inception, YCS strived to accommodate children from all walks of life.  The school motto became “Kopanang” (come together) and our volunteers at YCS are proud to be part of that.
These children enrich you in ways you never could imagine!
